The company included a new version of their website designer in their lineup of products. In order to showcase to customers, what this designer can do, I was tasked to create template designs that can then be shown on our website.
I didn’t just want to build random designs. Rather I the concept was to create websites, people could see themselves in. Stories about people who could be real. People like you and me.
I wanted to enforce this idea, that creating websites is simple and accessible. That everyone can do it.
The tool used for these designs is very simple. It does not allow for fancy animations or showy flares, but focuses on content.
Stefan remembers exactly what it was like when he was able to help his grandfather with a bouillabaisse for the first time. The sweet smell of fish, the onions burning in his eyes, the colourful hues of herbs, tomatoes, garlic, and star anise. The pride he felt when he was allowed to cut a bundle of parsley into strips with his little children’s knife.
The Palasia is an ode to the craft and art of cooking. Stefan bought the location from its previous owners. The building used to be one of the city’s horse stables, back when the hackney carriages still were an integral part of Vienna’s daily life. The Palasia stands for combining the familiar with the surprising and new.
The Pocket Theatre is a small, cozy venue for both great plays and entertainment and serves as an introduction to more unknown avant-garde pieces. It’s very much inspired by small art theatres, it unifies the world stage with local artists.
Anton was born in Ciudad Cortés in Costa Rica in 1978. His single mother fell in love with an Austrian painter, and they moved on to Graz. He discovered his love of photography through his foster father, who often took reference photos for his paintings. Anton had his first exhibition at the age of twelve. Countless others were to follow.
I chose those photos very carefully. Not a photographer myself, I focused on similar styles in one gallery, rather than overall. Where I couldn’t find photos from the same shoot, I made them as similar as possible through colour grading and cropping.
A car manufacturer is probably not the first things that comes to mind when thinking of websites for smaller to medium sized companies. However, Hoststar has a lot of male clients who live in the countryside, so cars are a good way to entice them.
Putting this one together wasn’t easy, since I only used photo that were free and unlicensed. Especially the interiors and having a similar looking page for each of the car models was hard to do.
The design for this shop reflects old money aesthetics without feeling old-fashioned. Places of taste and wealth. After all, you do need a certain amount of income to order a bespoke piece of furniture from Lucia Galvanetti.
Lucia Galvanetti, was born in Turin in 1962. She completed her studies at the Instituto Marangoni Milano. She then worked at various renowned furniture stores such as Esperiri, Nautical and Canssina. After a very fruitful collaboration with furniture designer Patricia Urquiola, she ventured into independence. Lucia lives with her cat Chiara in Linz, where she also has her studio.
If you speak Italian, you can see that the names of the the furniture are shortened Italian words that fit the design.
I wanted this to be a place where I felt at ease to go to. Not something that’s focused on competition, but rather wellness and a sense of belonging and safety. For that purpose, the design has a lot of soft edges and friendly, bright colours and iconography.
The owners, Yande, Sara, and Marko are friends, who met each other in high school and bonded over sports. Yande and Marko shared their dream of opening a fitness studio and roped in Sara. The rest is history.
I imagined the Highwayman to be someone who’s had a hard life. Someone who’d experienced his fair share tragedies but had never given up. Someone who had found solace between the lines of music and freedom on the road. An old hard rock soul.
The Hghwayman always courted success, but through some misfortune never quite learned its delicate dance. Always in proximity to greatness, never quite in its limelight.
The website is deliberately trashy. A bit 2000s. As though it’s been created by someone who doesn’t quite know the ins and outs of design. Maybe a relative, or a friend who owed him a favor. The same goes for the album covers, except fort he most recent one (because, lets be honest, most album covers just aren’t very good, especially those from the 90s).
